I've Returned

I wish I could have thought of a better title for this post. This one is bland, isn’t it? I even looked at a thesaurus. The word, returned, is as exciting as it gets.

I’ve missed reading your blogs. Were you even aware that I was absent from your domains? Chances are you didn’t know. That’s okay though. I prefer it that way, in fact. The last thing I want is that feeling of guilt for not keeping up with the blogosphere.

I did unsubscribe from a few blogs during the course of these two months. I wasn’t getting anything out of what I was reading at those sites. They’re the ones targeted toward writers (I didn’t leave all of them though.) The perceptions of these blogs were wrong for me. I’m sure there are many others who find those points of view to be perfect for them, just not for me.

Where did I go and what did I see?

I went nowhere. In fact, I rarely went outside. It was either raining or too blasted hot. Sometimes it was both, which was really disgusting.

I did, however, see something worth sharing with you. I may have told you this first part before, but to be sure, I’m writing it again.

We have both inside kitties and outside kitties. The outside kitties are strays in the neighborhood. There’s a small gray female who we call Mama because her purpose in life, until recently, was to get pregnant and have litters of kittens. The first cat who came to visit our patio door was a white Manx male cat. We named him Jake. Mama and Jake must have become a couple in spite the actuality that cats don’t have life-long mates. They’ve had two litters together. We got both of these cats fixed this summer. I’m told it’s the best thing for them but I can’t say that I buy that answer. It seems to me that it’s just better for us humans. I know this is only my opinion and there are many who don’t agree with me. So be it.

The couple’s first litter included three sons, Stubby and Henry, and another male that got ran over before he was six months old. Their second litter included two males, Greyson and Clarence, and two females, Charlotte and one we didn’t name because a woman we know wanted to adopt her. We haven’t found out what name she’s given her kitten yet.

I don’t know if it’s because she was fixed or that she’s getting old, but Mama was getting worn out taking care of this second litter. A hero saved the day for her though. Stubby took over all playtime for Mama. Mama is still teaching them things in the woods behind our house and brings them up on the deck for food, but Stubby is doing the rest.

I read four books during these last two months. I know that isn’t a lot for most people but because of my situation at home right now, it isn’t too bad either. The four books:

• Loose Ends by Terri Reid
• The Thrill of the Haunt by E. J. Copperman
• Turning Angel by Greg Iles
• Sole Survivor by Dean Koontz

Did I get any writing done?

Yes, I did, although not as much as I was hoping for. I guess my drive for my project was way down because during these last two months, my concentration is steadily gotten better and I feel that my confidence has taken a leap, at least concerning my writing process. This first draft of my intent is rough to the point of being seedy, but I keep on plugging along, knowing that the second draft will be better. I wish I could get the hang of being a plotter instead of a pantser, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

Something else I’ve started doing is making a list of words I’m not completely sure of that I find when I read for pleasure. Yes, my vocabulary level is atrocious, so I’m trying to do something about it.

September

I used to love September as a kid. It had nothing to do with my birthday either. (Yes, I’m a September child.) I started going to school in 1959. Back then, school wasn’t thought about or discussed until after Labor Day, the first Monday of September. School wouldn’t open until the following Monday. I loved the excitement of getting new clothes, two full outfits at the most. I could hardly wait to go to the drug store to buy my school supplies: the notebook, paper, p-g folders, pens, pencils and whatever else was needed. Yes, I was one of those strange kids who loved school.

Nowadays school is open by mid-August, and in some places it starts the first part of August. I’ve seen some of the work my great niece and nephew have brought home. I’m appalled at how elementary their work still is. One is in middle school and the other is in high school. They think the assignment is hard if it takes more than one page of their paper to complete it. I wonder if they’re going to be ready to face the world once they graduate.

Despite my disappointment of today’s world, I still like September. The slightly cooler breezes brings to mind the changing of the season and soon there’ll be different colored leaves on the trees.

How was it for you these past two months?

      Hi April

It’s so good to hear that things are better with you. Was it the summer weather that helped or have you been working like a Trojan on yourself? ❤

You know? I’m glad your personal improvement is from your own hard work. It means the improvement should stick — which wouldn’t be the case if it was just the summer months that did it. You deserve a jelly donut. 😛

  1. Welcome back! It sounds like you have had a nice break. I have not done a heck of a lot. We have been at our lake cottage part of most weeks and as always working on fixing it up (30 years of trying to get it up to par). I also have been applying for jobs and trying to keep up my optimism for this “get me back to work” project.

      Hi Linda

A lake cottage… the perfect place to hang out in my opinion. If it has electricity, a full bathroom (with shower), a small kitchen, fans for the hot weather and heat for the cold, it has everything I want. 😛

What type of job are you looking for?

      1. Grin… Full electricity is dependent on sunny days and solar panels… but we do have a shower and running water. One of the summers projects is moving up from an outhouse to a composting toilet. It is worth it though, last weekend I saw a pair of eagles, a loon with a baby on its back and a humming bird and I know a beaver was in my yard.

I completed a college certification program in June and am now qualified as a Therapeutic Recreation Facilitator. Not easy getting a job though.

Are there any rehab. centers in Winnipeg? It’s a big city. There must be centers for retirees and disability. You may have to start lower than what you want but I’m sure you could prove your worth with no problems.

I just want to help. I can’t find a job either but it’s because of my particular disability and my age.

          1. I am being very flexible in what I apply for and feel hopeful that it will all work out eventually. I have no doubt that I am good at the job but I am older too and other issues. Most of my younger classmates have jobs already.

It’s sad that age is still such a big deal with employers. Especially when so many of the younger ones aren’t staying with one company for over 2 years usually. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

  2. Yes, we noticed you were gone, but we’re patient. It happens–life intrudes. Breaks are required. That’s the beauty of online friends. You can walk away for a while, come back and we’re as you left us! It sounds like you had fun.

It’s nice to be back, although I need to set up a pattern again for my daily life. For some quirky reason, I have discovered that I do better with my writing project if I’m also writing in this blog. Could it be that I’m more natural concise when I work on the blog too? Good possibility. :/

  3. Good to have you back! You’re right about education. I’ve seen it slipping in the schools too. People have a choice to learn more, but for the ones who aren’t as motivated the education system seems to be letting them slip through the cracks. What ever happened to hard work? I hope you enjoy the months to come and maybe we’ll get to see more of you around here.

There is one shining light that has come along recently concerning education. I wish it had been around when my son was still in school. I’m talking about the K-12 program online. My son would have done so much better with that because of his high IQ and photographic memory. He didn’t do well in school all because he was bored out of his mind.

Right now I’ll be doing the 2 posts per week like I was doing before. However, I may do more a little later because my general health has gotten better now.

What’s so great about it is that it’s part of the school system nationwide so it’s free with teachers who are teaching or have taught in the public school system. I know that the rep. of the public school system isn’t what it use to be but I believe that has more to do with the social behavior of the kids and how teachers are allowed to handle situations. With the online program, the kid is at home where the parent can/should have control over the kid. There’s more one-on-one for the kid, which is so much better in some cases.

  4. Nice to see you back, Glynis. In a way summer has zipped along this year. Time to get back on a schedule. I read your conversation with Jacqui. You may have a point regarding writing on the blog as well as your own writing. So, the start of something new now that your’re back?

Think I mentioned it before but I can say it again. Love the new look and the dividers between subjects in your post.

      Hi Tess

No, nothing new in writing projects. I just keep plugging away at what I’ve been writing for a while.

I’ll be changing the look of the theme within the next two days. The dividers will still be there. 😀

Okay… There’s the one about ghosts who live just beyond the backyard of Raeann’s home. I’m also working on one that is about a young woman (26 years old) finding her own way to becoming a shaman. AND one I dabble with when my mind goes blank on the other two is about a woman who slowly loses her grip on reality. Yes, the third one is a dark one.

Yes, that is writing, isn’t it? I was referring more to my writing project though.

As for helping you on your blog so you have more time for other things that are important to you, I love helping out. I still have many other easy recipes that don’t tread too heavily on Diabetes so you’ll be reviewing my posts for quite a while. 😉

  5. It’s great to see you back. I envy that you had the courage to take a blogging break as it can be quite the task to figure out the right balance. And yes, I noticed your absence, but like all good blogging friends, it’s a given sometimes we can drop in and sometimes we can’t. Cute kitties too 🙂

      Hi Jeri

My reason for the break was to do more writing, yet, because Hubby was recuperating from neck surgery, it didn’t work out the way I had planned. As he improved, I thought I’d get my butt back into the chair, but the rhythm wasn’t there. I did write but, like I stated, not as much as I was hoping for. I guess I need the blog to keep the rhythm going for some odd reason. :/

The kitties are adorable. Only one has the regular long tail like Mama. The other ones have various shorter length tails because of Jake. They look so silly from the backside. 🙂

So good to see you here!
Life sure knows how to send us a challenge or two. Been working on my latest! Doing better, but need to build up my resolve and perseverance! My blog has just sat there for nine months! Something about the need for concentration along with that perseverance issue in my life :-O

You know, Barbara, it could be that you have a glitch in your inspirational drawer within your head. When this happens to me, I go looking for fictional books to read and get absorbed in them. Sometimes that takes a while too. Even the best of authors have clunkers out there. 😉

My focus, concentration have taken a beating post silent stroke. It was minor, but unsettling. Learning new ways to bring a sense of purpose and focus on board! Makes life interesting, that is for sure!! 🙂

  7. Good to see you back. I am behind a couple of days on my reading and commenting so only just got to this.
Life has been interesting whilst you were gone but that is life.
I’m so pleased that yours has been motoring along well and that the cats and some writing have kept you busy. I hope your husband’s neck is healing nicely.
    Blessings to you.

Hubby’s neck is better than it was before the surgery. There’s still some pain but not like before. Now to just convince him that he doesn’t need constant care any more. Yes, I jest, but only a little. 😛

  8. It’s good to see you back, Glynis!

I took one specific “blogging break” (temporarily stopped all notifications) while we were away on vacation this summer. I think all bloggers blog because they really enjoy it, but it’s good — and, I think, necessary — to step away for a while. If not, real life tends to become just blogging material instead of something to LIVE. (I may be personalizing a bit???? 🙂 )

    Anyway, welcome back!

      Hi Cindi

Yes, I think you’re right. We who blog seem to always be looking for material to write about. Yet, we don’t quite ‘live’ what we blog when we don’t take time to experience life.

  9. Glad that you’re back, Glynis! Thanks for sharing what you did during your time off. It looks like you truly enjoyed your reading and writing time. One of the nice things about taking breaks is that there is such renewal of energy and zest.

Have great September, after all, the entire month is yours to celebrate your birthday.
    Happy Birthday!
